Steve received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Stanford University in 1980, and then received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley in 1982. He was recognized by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants for performance with high distinction for placing within the top 120 scores in the country, of the 70,000 individuals taking the uniform CPA examination in November of 1982. For this Steve received the Elijah Watt Sells award from the AICPA. In 1992, Steve also earned a Masters in Taxation degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, receiving the “Outstanding Student Award” upon his graduation, being ranked as the top student in the tax department.
Steve began his professional accounting career as a tax consultant with Kenneth Leventhal & Company, a national accounting firm that specialized in the real estate and banking industries. At Leventhal, Steve gained audit and tax experience by working on several of the largest real estate developers and landlords in the booming Silicon Valley of the early 1980’s. In April of 1985 Steve coauthored a real estate tax article published in The Real Estate Tax Digest, edited by Marvin B. Starr.
From the mid 1980’s to 1990, Steve essentially wore two hats; he ran his father’s local CPA practice, and he was a principal in a real estate development group that developed and operated millions of dollars of various real estate projects (see page entitled “Real Estate Consulting” for more information). Since 1990, Steve and his brother Jerry have owned, operated and grown Ghirardo CPA.
Steve lives in Novato with his wife Michelle and their youngest son, Mike. His oldest daughter Stephanie attends UC Davis, daughter Jessica attends UCLA and son Nick attends Santa Clara University. Steve spent many years coaching his children and their various athletic teams, principally in soccer and basketball. In the year 2000 Steve was honored as “Male Coach of the Year” by the Novato Youth Soccer Association (NYSA) for his work with the U-10 boys soccer team – The Explosion. Steve still enjoys watching his son Mike play soccer, basketball and baseball at Novato High School.
